Learning to recognize the symptoms can help you solve the problem before it affects your harvest.
Here’s what to look for.
1. Natural Aging (The Most Common Cause)

Sometimes, yellow leaves are simply part of the plant’s natural aging process.
As a plant grows, its oldest leaves—usually those near the bottom—may gradually turn yellow and eventually die off. The plant is reallocating resources as it continues producing new leaves, flowers, and fruit.
If it’s only a few of the oldest lower leaves turning yellow while the rest of the plant looks healthy and continues growing normally, there may be nothing to worry about.

The important thing is to look at the overall pattern. A few aging leaves are normal. But widespread or rapidly progressing yellowing—especially when it affects newer growth or comes with spots, wilting, curling, or stunted growth—may point to another problem that needs attention.

This can happen especially quickly with container-grown tomatoes, since pots can dry out much faster than raised beds or in-ground gardens during hot and windy weather.

6. Septoria Leaf Spot
Septoria leaf spot often becomes noticeable during periods of warm, wet, and humid weather, when conditions are favorable for the disease to spread.
Like early blight, Septoria commonly begins on the older leaves near the bottom of the tomato plant and gradually works its way upward. The leaves develop numerous small, round spots with darker margins and lighter gray or tan centers. As the infection progresses, the surrounding foliage can turn yellow, then brown, and eventually die.

Because Septoria and early blight can both cause yellowing and spotting on lower tomato leaves, it’s helpful to look closely at the spots. Septoria usually produces many smaller spots, while early blight is more likely to produce larger lesions with distinctive concentric, target-like rings.

Unlike a tomato that simply wilts because the soil is dry, a plant affected by vascular wilt may continue to look wilted even when adequate moisture is available.
