How it started?

Hi there!

I’m Lannie Armstrong, a wife and a passionate backyard gardener Maryland USA. I enjoy gardening all-year-round and sharing small space gardening tips and tricks.

Gingerfoot Garden started after a walk with a friend of mine in the spring of 2019. There was a truck parked on the side of the street selling some plants at a bargain price. I decided to take home a couple of ornamental plants. I never thought about myself as someone with a green thumb so on my way home, I was asking myself how will I keep those plants alive? I remember watching a LOT of gardening videos and just soaking in as much information as I could to help those plants survive, if not thrive.

Learning about gardening became my form of entertainment and it fueled my appetite to learning something new. Gardening became my workout. It provided another space at home to enjoy during the pandemic.

Why Gingerfoot Garden?

My home garden started on our patio and deck. One day, my dear husband decided to take a photo of me while transplanting some lettuce seedlings. I asked him to crop a portion of the photos because my “ginger foot” is visible. Back in the Philippines, wrinkly (ugly) feet is called “Luyang paa,” which is translated as “Ginger Foot.” We we’re laughing and he made a joke that it should be the name of my garden, to which I agreed later on. I thought it sounded cute.

A couple of weeks later I decided to create an account on Instagram and you guessed it! I named it Gingerfoot Garden [“ginger” + “foot” in one word]. I was just looking for a place to put my gardening photos and to create a visual journal of my garden. Little did I know that I will find so many like-minded gardeners from all over the world. I feel in love with the connections I’ve made. Now I have a gardening community that shares the same passion with me for growing plants, feeding our family with organic pesticide-free vegetables right from our backyard, and helping the environment.

Fun facts about me:
  • I was born and raised in the Philippines.
  • I moved to the United States in 2012 to marry my Michael.
  • I am saved by God’s grace and mercy.
